Queensland Willowbank Raceway Long-term V8 vision

WORK is under way to ensure the unmistakable roar of a V8 Supercar will be heard at Queensland Raceway for many years to come.

The V8 Supercars Championship Series will return to the Willowbank facility next August, and Ipswich Mayor Paul Pisasale has his eyes on a much bigger prize.

“We’ve got the V8s to come back, it’s all official now,” Cr Pisasale said yesterday.

“The next step is working with Sport Minister Phil Reeves, John Tetley from Queensland Raceway and the team from V8 Supercars Australia to develop a long-standing event that Ipswich can be really proud of.”

Cr Pisasale said he was confident the Ipswich round would be a success.

“From a motorsport point of view, a tourism point of view and a city point of view we need to get behind this,” he said.

“The V8s inject a huge amount of money into the Ipswich economy and we’re going to get this right.

“I can tell you, we’re going to develop something very strong and very exciting.”

Metro Hotel Ipswich International general manager Alex Van Kersen said the announcement was great news for local tourism operators.

“It had an immediate effect on our business,” he said.

“As soon as we got confirmation of the dates, the phone was ringing off the hook.

“Although it’s August next year, it’s absolutely fantastic news for us. We expect to be fully booked for four days.

“I’m glad it’s all been confirmed, it’s certainly come at the right time for us as a business and for Ipswich as a city.”

V8 Supercars Australia CEO Martin Whitaker said race details would be announced this month.

“The support we have received from the State Government and Ipswich City Council gives us the opportunity of creating a real differentiator for the championship at Queensland Raceway,” he said.

“Our plans are to announce an exciting new development in late November.”

2011 CALENDAR

Next year’s V8 Supercars Championship Series will feature a round at Queensland Raceway from August 19-21.

The Bahrain round has been dropped, while the championship will return to Western Australia for the first time since 2009 in May.
