From late January through February, Sydney is set to come alive as the city celebrates Chinese New Year. The City of Sydney will officially launch the celebrations on 28 January, after which entertainment venues will feature major Chinese productions and special events.
The State Theatre will begin with the staging of the much acclaimed Festival of Spring on February 5 – a traditional singing, dancing and martial arts performance from the official Chinese Dancing and Performance Cultures of China.
This event is followed by the Mulan Acrobatic Show on February 10 - 13, where audiences will be treated to a spectacular showcase of culture and performance from Chongqing Province. Using acrobatics, dance, shadow play and martial arts, performers will tell this traditional story made famous in the animated movie of a girl who joined the army in the place of her father.
At the Capitol Theatre, Shen Yun Performing Arts will bring classical Chinese dance and music to life with a stunning performance featuring 100 of the world's best classical artists, masterful choreography, breathtaking costumes and state-of-the-art digital backdrops.
Events such the Dragon Boat Races on February 12-13 and the Chinese New Year markets will add to the celebratory atmosphere of the city, while the Twilight Parade held on February 6 to welcome in the Lunar Year is expected to be a major highlight, featuring 250 Chinese performers from Hubei including a Wudang martial arts troupe, a stunning illuminated Yellow Crane Tower, and a pack of rabbit magicians producing surprises from their hats.
