Metro Hotels is to invest $6million in a substantial renovation and refurbishment of its Perth icon, Metro Hotel on Canning, as part of a staged upgrade of all Metro properties throughout Australia.
Metro Hotels Chief Operating Office George Bedwani said the decision to upgrade was driven by the significant demand for quality hotel accommodation in Perth along with the organisation’s desire to provide minimum four star quality accommodation in all 11 of its hotel and apartment properties.
“Most importantly, our decision to undertake a full refurbishment, as opposed to a soft refurbishment, was made for the benefit and convenience of our regular guests,” Mr Bedwani said.
He said renovations commenced on August 11 and will be completed in early 2009, in time for strong growth in the accommodation market anticipated next year.
“Metro Hotels has renovated and refurbished a number of its properties in the past few years, generating excellent feedback from both the tourism industry and guests,” Mr Bedwani said. “We are expecting the same positive response to the planned renovation of Metro Hotel on Canning, as it is our intention to ensure an outcome of exceptional quality.”
Perth was recently named the city with the highest occupancy rate in Australia and one of the highest internationally in Deloitte’s 2007 Hotel Occupancy Global Ranking Index. The annual Deloitte survey compared the performance of more than 7800 hotels, most of which are three-star and above, from 165 cities outside North America.
According to the Deloitte Global Performance Review report, Perth has experienced a 10 per cent increase in occupancy since 2000, with occupancy rates rising to 85.1 per cent in 2007 – the highest of the 165 cities reviewed. With no major hotel developments planned for Perth, Metro Hotels is further capitalising on the excellent position of its Perth property to ensure a quality accommodation experience to meet the increased demand.
Situated on the south side of Perth just 10 minutes drive from the CBD, Metro Hotel on Canning enjoys a prime vantage point on the south side of the Swan River. The hotel is now a well-known landmark on the Perth skyline and has, over the last 35 years, acquired iconic status with residents and visitors alike.
The hotel has 94 rooms, 70 of which overlook the scenic Swan River, appealing to a broad mix of business and leisure visitors. The hotel has seven conference rooms with a seating capacity for 200 people, its own licensed restaurant and bar, an outdoor swimming pool and parking.
Metro Hotels is the public face of Transmetro Corporation, an Australian owned public company listed on the Australian Stock Exchange. The Group currently provides a national accommodation network of properties, with over 800 rooms in key locations and major cities across Australia.
