Students from Bremer State High School were encouraged to “think beyond McDonalds” and consider part-time work or a full-time career in hospitality when they visited Metro Hotel Ispwich International recently.
Metro Hotel Ipswich International Guest Relations Manager Fran Edney met with 18 social science students from Bremer State High School to raise awareness of the hotel and the services it provided, as well as to encourage the students to consider a career in hospitality.
“Many students have part-time jobs in fast food outlets like McDonalds but we encouraged them to think beyond these outlets and to consider getting jobs in hospitality,” Ms Edney said. “Many of the students had not considered contacting us for casual work as they thought a hotel of this standard would not even consider employing students. Yet there are many part-time work opportunities available in hotels which can teach young people about the benefits of a career in hospitality, as well as providing us with valuable staff.”
The hotel excursion was initiated by Bremer State High School social sciences teacher Louise Leabeater, who organised for the 18 Year 12 students to visit the hotel as part of their unit on accommodation. Students were required to complete a booklet on the hotel’s services and facilities, with the information then converted to a ‘travel agent’s’ PowerPoint presentation for assessment.
“The students were thoroughly engaged and were treated to many insights into both the facilities of the hotel and the intricacies of the tourism and hospitality industry,” Ms Leabeater said. “The hotel staff was extremely friendly, supportive and informative, providing the students with an amazing experience – one which they will never forget.”
Ms Edney said she was impressed by the enthusiasm of the students and their interest in learning about the many services provided by a 4.5 star hotel in the Ipswich CBD. She said the experience was very rewarding and the hotel hoped to have the opportunity to speak with other students in the future to spread the word about hospitality as a career choice.
The relationship between the hotel and Bremer State High School will also continue, with the students booking their Year 12 Formal at the hotel on November 15. With seven different function rooms, each unique in layout and style, the hotel can cater for large school formals or corporate events for up to 400 people, or small business meetings. Each room is fully air-conditioned and offers easy access to amenities, while a team of onsite chefs prepares all food to order, ensuring a high standard of quality and freshness.
