Groote Eylandt Lodge boasts 60 waterfront rooms and bungalows with breathtaking views of the ocean in the categories of Executive and Deluxe bungalows plus Business suites. All rooms have balconies where you can relax and take in your surroundings over a cup of tea, coffee or a cool drink. Security is our priority, and Groote Eylandt Lodge provides a manned reception desk from early morning until late at night. SURROUNDS: Groote Eylandt Lodge is situated directly on the coastline of Groote Eylandt in the Gulf of Carpentaria. Attractions and activities include Alyangula Recreational Club, Alyangula Golf Club, Gymnasium, Groote Eylandt Game Fishing Club, Tennis Association, Squash Club, Outdoor Swimming Pool, Basketball courts, AusSwim and Squad, Book Club, Dance Club, Gun Club, Outdoor Movie Theatre, Netball, Touch Football and Rugby Associations. The Groote Eylandt terrain comprises of woodland country fringed by mangroves on the coast with pristine beaches. The island’s resources are managed by Rangers who take great pride in the island’s natural habitat. Groote Eylandt Lodge is working with the Anindilyakwa-speaking people, helping to organise a diverse range of tours that will enhance your Groote Eylandt experience. Groote Eylandt is a fantastic spot for fishing, with Queen fish, trevally, tuna, billfish, mackerel, barracuda and many reef species in abundance. The elusive, world famous barramundi, growing to more than a metre in length, inhabits the waters around Groote Eylandt and will certainly test your angling skills. Visitors to Groote Eylandt Lodge are able to enjoy two private clubs, the Alyangula Recreational Club and the Golf Club, with adjoining 9-hole golf course. Another key feature of the Resort is the Cultural Centre. View local art including paintings, basket and mat weaving, didgeridoos and carvings or meet with local artists. In 2005, Anindilyakwa Art was established to help the Indigenous artists of Groote Eylandt to promote and market their artefacts and crafts. Items available through Anindilyakwa Art include paintings (ochres and acrylics on canvas, bark and shells), ceremonial and traditional wood works and carvings (spears, woomeras, coolamons, clap sticks, miniature canoes, didgeridoos, boomerangs and carved animals). Traditional and unique jewellery design using materials only found on the island (shells and seeds), weaving (pandanas mats, baskets and dillybags) using traditional methods and natural dyes are also a popular choice. The Cultural Centre plays host to local musicians and dancers to entertain visitors of the Resort.
TRANSPORTATION: Flights from Darwin to Groote Eylandt take approximately 1.5 hours. On arrival there is a shuttle service that will take you to and from the airport (charges apply). Please note there are no taxis on the island.
