In 2026, Metro Hospitality Group proudly celebrates 50 years of providing trusted accommodation across Australia, marking a significant milestone shaped by people, partnerships and a long-standing commitment to guests.
Founded in Sydney in 1976, Metro Hotels began with a clear vision: to offer dependable, well-located accommodation that travellers could rely on, whether visiting for business, leisure or longer stays. That vision continues to guide Metro Hospitality Group today.
Chairman John McEvoy has led Metro Hotels through five decades of change and growth. Metro Hotels is the main trading entity of Metro Hospitality Group, the operating arm of Transmetro Corporation Limited, which has been listed on the ASX for nearly forty years.
“Reaching 50 years is an achievement we are incredibly proud of,” said McEvoy. “It reflects the loyalty of our guests, the dedication of our people and the strength of the partnerships we have built over many years. As we look ahead, our focus remains on delivering quality accommodation and genuine service in the locations that matter most to our guests.”
Metro Hotels entered the accommodation market in the mid-1970s with the acquisition of several key properties in suburban Sydney, including Metro Inn Edgecliff in 1976, Metro Inn Ryde in 1977 and Metro Hotel Miranda in 1978. Metro Inn Chippendale followed in 1979, and Metro Inn Ashfield in 1980. These early hotels established the foundations of the brand and its reputation for practical comfort and accessible locations.
As the business evolved through the 1980s, Metro Hotels expanded beyond New South Wales and into larger landmark properties, including the Canberra Rex, Metro Hotel Perth, and the Metro Hotel at the former Sydney Entertainment Centre. In the 1990s, the group took over Brisbane’s Tower Mill Hotel. The Tower Mill holds a distinctive place in Australian history, known both for its innovative design and its connection to significant social and political events during the early 1970s.
Throughout the 1990s and 2000s, Metro Hotels continued to adapt alongside Australia’s changing urban landscape. Until 2017, Metro Hospitality Group operated two hotels on Pitt Street in Sydney’s CBD, including the four-star Metro Hotel on Pitt, which was closed and demolished to make way for the Sydney Metro project. These changes reflect Metro Hotels’ long-standing presence in major city centres and its ability to evolve with them.
During its 50-year history, Metro Hospitality Group’s portfolio also extended to other parts of Queensland, the Northern Territory, South Australia and Victoria, reflecting its growing national presence.
Today, Metro Hospitality Group operates eight hotels across Australia, with five properties in Sydney, two in Perth and one in Darwin. The upcoming opening of Metro Hotel Martin Place is set to be an exciting addition to the portfolio, reinforcing Metro Hospitality Group’s continued investment in central city locations.
Strong partnerships have been an important part of Metro Hospitality Group’s success and its commitment to delivering value for guests.
Local and national partnerships also reflect the company’s community focus.
Metro Hotels is a participant in the Qantas Frequent Flyer program, giving travellers the opportunity to earn points with every eligible stay. Metro Hospitality Group also supports community and member benefit schemes, including the Probus Members Benefits Scheme and Australian Defence Force discounts, reinforcing its commitment to welcoming a diverse range of guests.
While properties and locations define Metro Hospitality Group’s footprint, the company recognises that its success is built on people.
Across five decades, team members have played a vital role in shaping the Metro experience through genuine service, local knowledge and long-term dedication. Many staff have built lasting careers within Metro Hospitality Group, contributing to a culture that values loyalty, teamwork and consistency.
Equally important are the guests who have chosen Metro Hotels as their home away from home. From business travellers and families to long-stay guests, their continued support has been central to Metro Hospitality Group’s story.
As Metro Hospitality Group celebrates its 50th anniversary, we do so with pride in our history and confidence in the future. With a strong leadership foundation, a growing portfolio and a continued focus on guests, people and community, we look forward to welcoming travellers across Australia for many years to come.
